Twelve Girls Band

I've been hearing for a while that traditional Chinese music was dying out, because no one wants to learn old instruments. But this band seems to be pretty cool - they're getting some crazy promotion all over Chinese media, but they seem pretty cool - they play a bunch of modern music with really old instruments: the Twelve Girls Band. They are apparently all from conservatories in China where, apparently, the knowledge of how to play traditional instruments is NOT dying out. I may decide to wait until they decide to appear on Amazon though - the shopping cart on their page seems pretty sketchy.

UPDATE: July 19th, 2004: I just reread this post and wow, I must have been really tired when posting. I hope my English is usually not this poor.

UPDATE: February 1, 2005: Wow, I haven't read this in a while. Lots of people have replied. Glad there are other fans out there too, but I'd just like to say that I AM NOT A MEMBER OF THE TWELVE GIRLS BAND. I have nothing to do with the band - I just listen to their music. I'm sorry if I somehow gave that impression - I thought referring to the band as 'they" and not "us" would be clear enough. But yeah, really cool music. I wish they would give a concert in the states.

I just saw a commercial about the band tonight on the TV and I was just awe struck! They're all so talented and beautiful! Then, I went on google.com to check them out, and your LiveJournal was on the first page of results. =)

Yeah same here. I keep seeing commercials on A&E. I googled it and as others have said, heres your LJ :>

On a side note, one band worth looking into that is along the same lines (although a bit more western) is Bond.

Very cool music...When I listened to the 60 sec sample of "Miracles"....the percussion sounded so much like Neal Peart of "RUSH" ..it was spooky. For those of you who do not know who Neal Peart is..suffice it to say .."it's a compliment". There's no doubt these girls are talented. I like their sound and presentation..."chaa...ching" for the 12GB!

There are three live concert DVDs - the first concert in Japan - 8/23/'03, followed by one in China, and the recent one in Bokodan Japan in 1/02/'04. There's also a 3 CD set recorded in HDCD and sounds sumptious, but to watch their performance while listening to the music - its quite an experience. Gusto,technique and pure joy on their faces. Check out your friendly oriental music/video stores ! they even have them in NTSCs!

Also the Live concert DVDs are over twenty full songs each.
(the first one has twelve -only)

I was able to attend the Chicago show on August 26th, and it was a night to remember. Sat in the very front row by some small miracle, and even had a chance to see the band up close after the show.

I've been a fan of the band for a long time (a little less than a year) and it makes me so happy to see them performing in my country. I hope they do very well and that they remain popular for a long time to come!

Check out my review of the night (and find out why it was extra-special) at my livejournal!

Hiya!

How old were you when you started playing the erhu (or I think it's an erhu) because I wanted to know how long it took you to play so wonderfully. Also, what other instruments do you play? (I read that all the band members are multi instrumental) I saw your commercial on MTV and I immediately went to your site. I think it's great how you played Coldplay's Clocks! Good luck on tour!

I love them

My mom saw a commercial about them, and remembered that I'm a classical music, especially oriental, and she saw the cd in the store and bought it for me. I can't get enough, I need more of their stuff. *laughs*

I always wanted to play the erhu and the dizi. ;~;
I'm stuck with the bassoon, and the marimba. ^^;

U-wah, I first listened to the TwelveGirlsBand at the bookstore, and I knew I just HAD to have it! I waited for a month till I had enough money to buy 'Eastern Energy' And I went again, and I saw they had another CD out ("Freedom")! Without hesitation I bought it! And, i'm glad I did! Their talent is amazing. Because of this I wish I could start playing Erhu, but I doubt there's anywhere in the U.S. you could learn.

I am stunned to my heart and soul by the sheer elegance, purity and universal language of their luminous music.
I could reveal my demographics, but I believe it would be pointless to say their music reaches only a select group of people. I hope and pray that they share more of their beautiful gifts with the rest of the world.
Once in several hundred or even thousand years does such unique talent come together in a miraculous manner. I believe that is what has occurred here. Listen while they are here, there will not be another group of such precious souls in many long years. We are blessed.
To the Twelvegirlsband, may God our Father in heaven bless, protect and guide you always.
speechless,
Steven

Hi there. I'm listening to the Twelve Girls Band Cd right now, and it's become what I call my "stress-relief therapy"; just something to get my mind off the everyday life and be able to relax. I must say, this has helped me a lot. And I'd really love to learn how to play the instruments as well. I'm planning on drawing something probably for the band. It's not my final decision on what I plan on doing, but I will let you know in time. And your English is really good. ^^ Hope to hear from you soon.

i'm pretty sure the chinese flute type things they plat are quite similar to the north american flutes. so i might be able to play the chinese flute if the fingerings are similar. nyaha. did you know that one of the flute players is left handed? i saw them both playing the smae instrument at the same time and one flute faced to the left and one to the right. although usually even if you are left handed the flute still faces to your right...i think...

12 Girls Band

Well, you might not realize this but they did do a tour in the USA already in 2004. They played in places such as Los Angeles, San Franscisco, Seattle, WA, Chicago, Atlanta, and finished up in Hawaii. They are a great band, however, I think they are simply not getting the press or coverage here to succeed as well as they have in China and Japan. IN fact, their USA website hasn't been updated for quite some time...it's disappointing. I have all of their DVDs/CDs'and if go to the YESASIA website in California you will find plenty of their DVD's to buy. There's also 2 other girl bands similiar to the 12girls..one of the the National Girls Band and I don't really remember the other..but they look promising. I've just ordered all the DVD's/CD's on the YESASIA website so I'll soon know if these new bands are as good as the original 12 girls. Any comments send them to me at BOBKOOL40@yahoo.com all..........bye
